Baby scam on Internet
Herald Sun
05 January 2004
LONDON – A baby has been
taken into care after her mother was accused of conning
thousands from childless couples in a "rent-a-womb"
internet scam.
Moira Greenslade, 33, of Keighley, West Yorkshire, is
said to have sold the girl to three couples, pocketing
up to $47,000. The couples are said to be considering
suing for DNA tests.
A spokesman for
Southampton's Princess Anne Hospital said: "It became
apparent to us this lady had done deals with (the
couples). All believed she was carrying their baby."
It is believed Ms
Greenslade, who has a son, 6, told each couple she was
pregnant with their child and demanded money.
Surrogacy payments are
illegal in Britain, but she used a US website. US law
permits such payments.
A police spokesman said
a woman, 33, had been arrested and bailed and the baby
taken into care.
Ms Greenslade refused
to comment.
