Fertility holidays in Sth Africa

Nov 21, 2003 nzoom.com

First there were scalpel safaris - trips to South Africa for cosmetic surgery and a holiday. Now a fertility clinic is trying to lure those who want to conceive while taking in some great scenery.

"Are you spending thousands of dollars on fertility procedures with nothing to show? Are you out of resources?," its online advertisement reads.

"Spend a maximum of 10,000 dollars for egg donation, the fertility treatment with a 60% success rate. This price is all inclusive for donor, procedure, medication, fees, air travel for two people to Cape Town, chauffeur-driven car and accommodation".

The Cape Fertility Clinic, a private facility, provides the egg donor procedure using the latest technology at about half the US cost and with less red tape.

Donors are locals from a range of ethnic groups. Many are university students who take around 15,000 rand ($NZ3,577) for their part in the procedure, in which they give up all right to the child it may produce.

Robin Newman, an American, came up with the idea for the package that is also tailored for couples seeking in-vitro fertilisation combined with a vacation.

In a recent interview she described her own experience: "I underwent fertility treatment myself for two decades. I tried everything possible and in the end I was left with nothing - no baby, no husband"
