Indian mother to give birth to her daughter's kids

Sunday, 18 January , 2004, 19:35 Sify News

London: An Indian woman will give birth to her own twin grand children next month after agreeing to be a surrogate mother to her London-based daughter, a daily reported Sunday.

The unnamed grand mother-to be was the last choice for the daughter, who cannot bear her own children and failed to find anyone else who would act as a surrogate, The Sunday Times reported.

The 44-year-old woman from Anand in Gujarat has gone into hiding, fearing disapproval of her neighbours, Times said. The daughter suffers from Rokitansky syndrome, a rare congenital condition that causes the uterus to develop abnormally but does not affect the ovaries.

She and her husband were able to produce a test-tube embryo but failed to find anyone to carry the child. Surrogates in England were asking too much money and Indian women flinched at the idea of bearing another man's child, the report said.

Finally, the couples doctor persuaded the woman's mother to help. "Her first reaction was one of horror. What will people say? How can I deliver my own son-in-laws baby? No, I cannot do this. But I prevailed on her and her other daughters also urged her to think about it."

In the end she agreed because she wanted to make her daughter happy by giving her a baby to hold. Her husband was also very supportive, the report said.

The pregnancy has gone well since the embryo was implanted last year. The grandmother now divides her time between household chores, prenatal exercises and special prayers for the twins well being, the report said.
