Mother held at hospital for 'selling baby on internet'
By Paul Stokes

A newborn baby girl has been taken into care while police
examine claims that her mother "sold" her to three different
couples through surrogacy arrangements made over the
internet.
The 33-year-old woman, who also has a son, was arrested at a
Southampton hospital on the day she gave birth, almost four
weeks ago.
She has been bailed while inquiries continue. Both children
are now the subject of confidential care proceedings. Social
services had put out an alert to hospitals when the mother
failed to turn up to have the child in West Yorkshire as
arranged.
The woman, from Keighley, West Yorks, is understood to have
advertised her services as a surrogate mother on an American
website.
US law permits payment for a surrogate pregnancy. This is
illegal in Britain, although voluntary surrogate pregnancies
are lawful, with up to £10,000 allowed to cover expenses.
It still has to be ascertained who is the biological father
of the baby girl.
