Paternal Instinct:
The Story of a Gay Male Couple, A Married Surrogate
Mother and Their Daughter Airs on Father's Day
proudparenting.com June17, 2004
Paternal Instinct, airing on Cinemax on Sunday, June
20th, is a riveting feature length documentary, which
portrays the intimate, challenging, funny and often
outrageous story of a gay male couple who have a child
with a surrogate mother. It is an in-depth, personal
program about love and the desire for family at the dawn
of the 21st Century.
Mark and Erik are a "married", professional,
successful, and unusually handsome couple who live in
New York City. Life is almost perfect, but they feel
something is missing: a child. On the Internet they
discover Wen, an intelligent, married computer
programmer from Yarmouth, Maine, who agrees to be their
surrogate mother. Wen is well versed in the ancient ways
of Wicca but turns out to be no ordinary, overweight,
kindhearted witch. Already the mother of a 14 year old
son, Wen wants to give the opportunity of family to
those who yearn for it, a task to which she is uniquely
suited.
Paternal Instinct chronicles a journey of mythical
proportions as Wen leads Mark and Erik on a journey of
deep love, loss (miscarriage, fertility challenges),
doubts, failure and finally preparation for parenthood.
Spanning three years, Paternal Instinct is a
documentary produced and directed by
psychologist/anthropologist Murray Nossel, who was
granted total access to penetrate the intimacy and
complexity of the extraordinary relationships that
developed during this period. Nossel is also director
/producer of A Brooklyn Family Tale, a major documentary
for PBS. Paternal Instinct is co-produced by Craig
Harwood, a successful entrepreneur with a commitment to
producing visionary work of social significance. It is
filmed by Edward Marritz, whose sensitive cinematography
has graced Oscar and Emmy award winning documentaries
and skillfully edited by internationally acclaimed
editor Suzanne Rostock.
By combining the privacy and intimacy of home video
and the beauty of professional cinematography, Paternal
Instinct is a visual feast that sweeps the audience into
a heightened emotional state of laughter, tears, and
outrage. It provokes, confronts and challenges
preconceived notions of gay parenting, surrogacy, the
rights of women and the sanctity of the nuclear family.
