The woman, known as Laura, took
out the advertisement in the Nottingham Evening Post
saying: "My husband and I want to have a family but
can't produce eggs".
"I was told - after a lot of
treatment and heartache - that the only way my husband
and I can have a family is through egg donation," Laura
said.
"It has given us a lot of hope,
but the blow is that there are not enough donors
available.
Serious shortage
"We are now hoping to get more
people to come forward and donate eggs."
Dr Simon Thornton of the Park
Hospital in Nottinghamshire said there is a national
shortage of eggs donors in the UK.
He said there is an increase in
the number of women who need donations - partly because
more women are surviving childhood cancer and having
operations for ovarian cysts.
The waiting list is about one
year at the Park Hospital and can reach four years in
some parts of the country, he said.
The egg donation scheme is
completely confidential, Dr Thornton said.
A single treatment cycle of IVF
costs between £2,000 and £4,000 - and more than one is
usually required.
