Woman in egg donor plea

BBCi  Thursday, 4 September, 2003, 21:18 GMT 22:18 UK

A 23-year-old woman has appealed for donor eggs to help her have a baby - five years after she started the menopause.

Gemma Fawcett, from South Shields, was just 18 when hospital tests revealed her rare condition.

She and partner John Armstrong, have been trying for a baby for five years and two years ago she was referred to Newcastle's Centre for Life.

Ms Fawcett says she desperately needs women to donate eggs.

She said: "I started trying for a baby since I was 18, but after a year when nothing had happened, I went to my doctor.

"He referred me to South Shields Hospital where they did a lot of tests, but nothing was working.

"I had a laparoscopy and further blood tests showed I was going through the menopause. It was a shock."

Ms Fawcett said being on the waiting list for an egg donor was frustrating.

"We have been on the waiting list for just over two years, but donors are very rare.

"When we first went on the list we were told about two years, but we are still just waiting for the donor now.

"I have a very good chance of carrying a baby.

"It has been very distressing and upsetting. We are just trying to be strong and getting on with things until our time comes."

Dr Jane Stewart, from Newcastle fertility centre at the Centre For Life, said they had around 60 couples on the waiting list.

She said: "People don't always know about egg donation and we are always pleased to hear from people who want to find out more about it.

"The process involves around six weeks worth of work from a drug treatment point of view."
