Egg and sperm donors to be named

The
Government is expected to announce plans to end
anonymity for egg and sperm donors tomorrow despite
strong opposition from specialist doctors in fertility
clinics.
The
doctors say it will end altruistic donation of eggs and
egg sharing schemes. The demand for sperm donation is
falling as clinics can do more to help men with low
fertility, but demand for eggs is rising.
"Before
any final decision is made we need a UK-based study that
will clearly prove that removing anonymity does good to
the offspring and does not harm the donor," said Dr
Kamal Ahuja, scientific director of the IVF unit at the
Cromwell Hospital, London. "This will kill off the
supply lines of egg and sperm donors. This will be a
massive own goal."
The
doctors fear that couples desperate to obtain eggs for
IVF treatment will be faced with years of waiting and be
forced to go to unregulated countries to buy eggs.
